Universal Navigator: The next-generation browser

May 25th, 2005 by Johnny

Universal Navigator: The next-generation browser? by ZDNet’s Dan Farber — Joe Firmage has spent the last five years and around $13 million, mostly his own money, trying to create the next generation of Internet navigation and a public/private partnership to build rich media content and a directory. His company, ManyOne Networks, has developed a browser (a variant of Mozilla) called “Universal Navigator” that adds new edge-caching [...]

2005 the theories 100 years latter

May 25th, 2005 by Johnny

Einstein must be playing dice with God and looking down at us still trying to disseminate what his genius showed us a century ago. Even with Moore’s law we still try and grasp the earth shattering theories put forth by Al while he sat filtering through other people’s inventions as a “patent slave”.

Historians call 1905 the annus mirabilis, the miracle year. At age 26 Albert Einstein in a single year wrote these scientific papers that would affect the world for the next one hundred years and counting. Makes me feel a little inadequate, at 26 I was only writing scribbling’s in my note book and the only thing they affected was the dust in my closet.

Here are his papers in chronological order.

In March 1905 he submits Annalen der Physik his paper on photoelectricity titled “On a Heuristic Point of View Concerning the Production and Transformation of Light”

In April 1905 he submits his doctoral dissertation to the University of Zurich “A New Determination of Molecular Dimensions”

In May 1905 he submits his paper on Brownian Motion titled “On the Motion of Small Particles Suspended in Liquids at Rest Required by the Molecular-Kinetic Theory of Heat” to the Annalen der Physik

In June 1905 he submits his paper titled “On the Electrodynamics of Moving Bodies” which deals with special relativity theory to Annalen der Physik.

In September 1905 he submits his mass-energy equivalence paper titled “Does the Inertia of a Body Depend upon Its Energy Content?” to the Annalen der Physik. This is the concept which would latter be written as E=mc2.

In December of 1905 he submits a paper titled “On the Theory of Brownian Motion” to the Annalen der Physik.

As the tale has it, sipping a cup of tea gave inspiration to the paper “On the Motion of Small Particles Suspended in Liquids at Rest Required by the Molecular-Kinetic Theory of Heat” I wonder if he had cream in that tea? Makes you wonder what he was drinking when he came up with special relativity or mass-energy equivalence.

It is a rarity among men to have such a short burst of brilliance. Similar feats can only be referenced a few other times in history and still they seemed to a longer time span. We look to men like Sir Isaac Newton and Leonardo da Vinci who have affected the world in a timeless way and know in our hearts and minds that in 500 years from now they will still be in awe of Einstein’s genius.

If you have yet to do so you must read the September ‘04 issue of Scientific American. It features Al in his entire splendor and puts his contributions into a modern day context. Here are some links for more information about these papers and the life of Albert Einstein.

Star Wars and Enclosures

May 22nd, 2005 by Johnny

Three days latter I get this post up. Sorry

I talk about my new digital recorder an Olympus Digital Voice Recorder VN-480PC

I spoke about an online video conferencing software I was using -http://www.flashmeeting.com/

I dig through the archives from when I was in school a funky track I stuck in ugh! Good for a laugh though BTW watch out for the Yagger in you collage years.

I recorded about 20 minutes on the new recorder while I was sick but in my feavered rambalings I actually made a good point or two.

Check out my blog for more detail on the enclosure and ID3 ideas that I speak of during this rant.

Of course I have a few bits on the new Star Wars movie and

Last but not least I want to thank Ric Todd and say I will do my best to try and find out where I can get some links to his music stay tuned.

Extending Enclosures, ID3 or utilizing RSS to its fullest

May 17th, 2005 by Johnny

I have been doing this for a little while now as a hobby and enjoy the outlet. In my humble opinion we should focus on expanding and improving the way Podcasts are created and aggregated.

I think we could possibly look at expanding the enclosure tag. I have spoken with a few people about creating a taxonomy and associating that within the enclosure for better filtering and search ability.

I would like to propose a taxonomy and an extension to enclosures that incorporates that taxonomy i.e. the show is about local football in the northwest and in the proposed taxonomy it would fall into (category/sports/football)(region/northwest) This is just an example the actual taxonomy would need to be defined.

I threw this out to Chris P. and he suggested that instead of enclosure perhaps putting the info in the ID3. I think anything we can do to improve the ability for people to get at the content they want can only help this medium.

Any thoughts on this from the community would greatly be appreciated. I don’t know anything about them but I am going to send this to the Podcasting Specification Working Group. Seems like it might be another good place to discuss this.

This is the e-mail I got back from the PSWG—

“I think that it should go in the ID3 tag… when the file format being used is mp3. The issue is that not all podcasts are in mp3 format. It also means that the whole mp3 needs to be downloaded if the client want to work with the data. So, more accurately stated, I think it should also go in the ID3 tag.

I think a better solution is to use an XML document to describe the podcast. This will mean that the metadata is in a usable format regardless of the media file, or files, attached to it.

I also don’t agree with taxonomy. I think we should look to using a folksonomy, a-la del.icio.us. Clay Shirky provides some very strong arguments in favor of it.

When coming from a standard web page, the PSWG is leaning toward suggesting an intermediate file, containing metadata, should be what is loaded initially by the browser. Depending on the sophistication of the browser, it could process that data or hand it off to a news reader or podcatcher. The metadata will be in a format that will allow both news readers and podcatchers to perform feats of magic :-) with the podcast.

I encourage you to continue this discussion on many of the mailing lists and forums focused on this topic. Please keep us informed of your thoughts on the subject.

thanx,
chaim

I threw out the enclosure because it already exists in the XML and was easy to get at. Also ID3 while a good option does have some issues. All shows are not feed in mp3 format, think torrent etc. Wouldn’t you need to download the mp3 file to then have Itunes, Audacity, Windows Media player what ever then read that ID3 info? We need something that your Ipodder, FeedDemon, Doppler, PTPR what ever client is aggregating the feed can skim through and feed into your play list based on the search criteria you input. So we need to add Meta data to the RSS feed so that clients can then more easily search for the shows the user is looking for. This is not as crucial now wit only 5,000 or so shows but as we move forward this is going to be an issue. I know websites like podcastalley.com and ipodder.org are classifying shows but isn’t the idea of RSS to not have to go hunt down the current data but that it is fed to you from your pre selected content providers.

So the service of categorization of these sites could be utilized from the client side if they chose lets say ipodder.org as a feed that they aggregated and then were able to provide some search terms and have shows feed to them based on these variables.

As for the categorization I used the idea of creating taxonomy because that is what we have done at my day job. I am working with Semantic Web to facilitate different Universities and how they will input meta into data. I have to be a little nondescript here due to constraints on what I can say. But needless to say I am working with some similar issues.

The Folksonomy “tags” idea would function just fine we would just need to be able to pull that info. However unless some body validates the “tags” then you run into to the problem of bogus categorization. Let’s say I am a nefarious porn king and I want to get unsuspecting listeners or viewers to download my content. I could easily put in a “tag” of Cooking and when you drop your head phones on you could hear some serious cooking ;) So perhaps a well defined and controlled structure might be more appropriate. However we will still need sites like podcastalley.com to verify whatever classification are used. Because even with a well defined structure nothing will prevent the porn king or spammers from misrepresenting themselves with no checks in place.

I love the idea of an intermediary file (XML) that could be parsed by the browser or podcast client. We could take advantage of RSS in more detail using optional channel elements http://blogs.law.harvard.edu/tech/rss#optionalChannelElements

I do not want to reinvent the wheel and am not trying to obfuscate any existing solution that with a little tweaking might work. I am only trying to extend a dialog on the matter.

Show Notes for Multi-Media Me- It’s a Boy!

So as you can tell from the title we are going to have a boy. Oh BOY! SO I move around a bit on this one. We have a couple of funnies and a great track from Ric Todd -”Hello It’s Me” I am not anti-Microsoft I am writing this in Word and use XP and 2003 as well as Linux and I have an old Mac that just got retired to the garage. If I didn’t think my wife would kill me I would go pick up a mini with Tiger. So I am an equal opportunity technologist.

Go, go Portland Podcasters–http://www.portlandpodcasting.org

Writing for Lockergnome

May 9th, 2005 by Johnny

Well I hope this does not dampen my personal writing but if it does oh well. I am very lucky in that my writing has been deemed worthy enough to be able to contribute to lockergnome.com Chris Pirillo’s publishing agency via the web. I encourage you to go check it out. I am also going to be writing for the portlandpodcasting.org our local meetup group about podcasting. I look forward to extending into other areas but with the copious amounts of work I have to do it may cause me to post to this blog and my podcasts a little further apart. I am about to mix down the latest podcast it should be out soon.

Podcasting on CBS TV

May 4th, 2005 by Johnny

An interview from months ago with “The PodFather” A.K.A. Adam Curry on Podcasting finally aired on CBS. Check out the link http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2005/04/26/eveningnews/main691083.shtml to see the interview. With those rose colored glasses no wonder Adam has such a good outlook. Well I for one also see an incredible potential for Podcasting, Vbloging and the coming PMO’s (Personal Media Outlets) that will be developed in garages and spare bed rooms all across the world. Hell some of them are being created in the bedroom, can we say Sexcasting.

Podcast Hotel UPDATE!!!

May 3rd, 2005 by Johnny

The timing of this event has been changed to September 8th-10th to join forces with other parties (more details latter) and grow the event it was decided that it would be beneficial if the event was moved. Alex and I had a little time to talk at the Portland Podcast Meet-Up but we did not get into any great detail. When he said September I got a little concerned with a baby due in late September. However unless the little one is early I will still be there. I jokingly my wife we could podcast the birth and she looked at me with that you will be eating the microphone if you even try. So I will leave it to Dawn and Drew or another program to record the birthing process.
