Last night a nice party was put on by Microsoft at the Seattle public library. No major announcements were made by Microsoft other than a few cool gadgets to give away. The experience you needed to have at the party was finding the red light district inside the library. As you walked into the “VIP” area it was like walking into a brothel in Europe. A hot red glow could be seen from the down stairs area and as one exited the elevator I immediately caught a scent and said “Oh this must be where Adam is.” He was not but a kindred sprit was and from the pungent aroma suggested this truly was an area for ‘higher’ learning.
But a good time was had by all except for Eric Rice. He was having a good old time right up until someone spilled a beer on his laptop while he was recording. The Apple laptop was only two weeks old, ouch! So after they kicked us out of the library a gaggle of us made our way down to Kell’s Irish pub for a pint of Guinness with good company. Then I grabbed a cab back to the Warwick with Eric and talked a little bit about the Road show he is doing and I confirmed the July 16th date for that in Portland as well as his participation in the Podcast Hotel.

Aza spoke about someone who said that blocking pop ups will kill the internet because it kills all the revenue. He then stated that he disagree that the community will talk about Ford products whether they were good or bad and that Ford will not has as much credibility as this user based marketing. They then started talking about the Firefox and WordPress similar business models. The prospect of the duel licensing model GPL and a proprietary model was discussed. Aza spoke about the growth of Firefox and the decision that they made to NOT listen to certain members of the older Mozilla development groups when they were putting together Firefox.

Getting to the root of how “We the Media” are distributing and creating high quality conversations via blogs, podcasting and other web based mediums. The spread of this technology and how that is going to change the way we communicate and interact via this new conduit of expression. I asked about remixing new pop culture and editing things from the context of our lives. For example if you wanted to mix in the slow dance song from you prom where you met your wife etc. and when do we reach a circle mass in litigation so that big media will loosen the strings on the media of our lives. Unfortunately the microphone was passed to a woman who is doing the legal presentation tomorrow and she said it will be a while the wheals of the legal system roll slow.

Doug Kay, Dave Winer, Adam Curry, Dan Gillmor, Dean Hachamovitch and of course Steve Gillmor are having a panel discussion on RSS, audio and video. Discussion moved to OPML and Attention and how directories are being created and if Microsoft is going to handle the other components that goes into all these feeds. Very interesting conversation about where things are headed and yours truly got the last question in which I put forth the new media revolution notion that the walls have come down and consumer is now the producer and we are now all personal media outlet’s (PMO) and consumers. I got a smile out of Dave Winer and I think he took a picture of me right after my question. If so I would like a copy
Scoble is wearing a Firefox hat oh God I love it!

The first graphic he showed was of Microsoft headquarters and then the Death Star is brought up on the screen. A laugh rolled across the audience, it is nice to see 800 pound gorilla poke fun at itself. Dean and all the Micorsoftians are wearing Longhorn “heart” RSS shirts.
Well here is one BIG thing we were just shown IE 7. Apparently this is the first public viewing of the new browser from Microsoft. Well this will be fun we keep hearing the mantra from Uncle Bill’s crew “RSS everywhere!” Dean was just referred to as the “friendly borg” when he said that he is not a Microsoftain borg entity and that he will answer questions.
They stared with Blogs and then moved onto Podcasts and other media that he referred to as “feeds of content”.
They then moved onto apps specifically Outlook and calendaring and RSS so he created a XML document that utilizes the schedule from Gnomedex and subscribed to it. So with some C# code he created a hook into Outlook. With a few comments laid out the mood in the room seems to be moving for shiny happy to answer the specific question. So things started coming back around when it was explained that they pulled in an ical file through the enclosure. Next topic photo blogging they wrote a simple screen saver that pulls in RSS feed photo with caption.
The third item they spoke about is lists. Extensions to RSS that adds lists to have them treated as a special entity. They used Amazon.com’s Wish list and then subscribed to explain the tag that they used to extend RSS. They began to speak about Meta data as it relates to pictures or other things in the list. Now they have pulled up Chris Pirillo’s wish list wow at the top of his list for DVD’s Little Nikky and Duce Deuce Bigalow: Male Gigolo, ugh we need to get you out to see some more movies
Microsoft is making these extensions available under Creative Commons under share alike.
As of noon they will have an architectural over view document of Simple List Extensions specification.

Keynote
Dave Winer - We are experiencing technical WIFI issues and so instead of jumping the demo Dave speaks off the cuff. An open session in sued and Dave said he “will fight to the death” to defend your right to have an opinion and the right to disagree with his. With that as the premises a melee of conversation commenced. The demo was on as Dave finally got an IP address and began his layout view from his outliner. He is showing OPML editor that is quick and easy to use tool that takes only a save to update the web. It is open source based on GPL and very slick and thin. The song was “Yellow Submarine” and the crowd sang on.

Well we are here in the Warwick in downtown Seattle. My wife has already made a comment about the traffic noise and I told her about when I first moved here. It was summer time and we had our windows open at night. I lived right off Deny which cuts across the down town area and the emergency vehicles use it all night long to get about. Well it took me about a week before I did not even notice. A lot of things have changed since 1999 and some things are the same.
We were walking to the West Lake center and Rob from Podcast411 sees the lockergnome RSS button I am wearing and asks if we are Gnomedexers. It turns out he is staying at the same hotel we are. We talk for a bit and after we say our good bye’s my wife turns to me and say’s you are such a geek that people pick you out walking down the street. Well I am really looking forward to tonight we are going to dinner at Anthony’s Pier 66, yum, and then it’s off to Odyssey to mingle.

I am heading up to Gnomedex on Thursday and am very excited about that. This gives me a chance to refocus for a short period of time on the exciting goings on in the world of RSS and Podcasting. A chance to meet up with people I have spoken with indirectly via discussion boards or via e-mail groups. I have been updating the Wiki for Gnomedex with some pertinent information about where I will be saying and looking at the schedule so I can coordinate with my wife who is coming along.
It looks like it will be a very interesting bunch in Seattle and the Keynotes should be interesting. I am trying to figure out where to pack all the gear I want to take with me and will need to find a Sherpa or two to help me cart it around. Perhaps that is my ticket to develop the steady cam harness for all the PMO (Personal Media Outlet) gear. Video camera on the pivot arm on the right a laptop and still camera on the left and a microphone stand attached to your head. Add a few lights and you would truly be the epitome of Neil Stephenson’s concept of a Gargoyle.
So if you are walking down the streets of Seattle and it looks like Dr. Mann and his Cyborg crew are headed straight at you don’t run away in fear come share the experience that will be Gnomedex and add your voice to the new revolution in media!
