Catastrophe on a Massive Scale

August 30th, 2005 by Johnny

This night we hope and pray that all those in New Orleans have found high ground. 80% of the city is under water and more levees are in danger. With millions of people affected all around the hurricanes ground fall and in land as well it is truly overwhelming. Katrina has left her mark and will be talked about in the 22nd century. I sit watching CNN and Fox News and wonder why more troupes were not staged and ready to move in. We are still waiting for relief and help to arrive and we knew this was a massive storm was coming.

Perhaps the same apathy to these storms that made people think they could just ‘ride it’ out affected the officials who were coordinating this effort prior to land fall. When I heard the news this morning and the mayor said this is the worst case scenario in referring to New Orleans I remember years ago learning that this town was below sea level and wondering what would happen if…

I am at a loss and just hope we are prepared for the overwhelming loss that the South and this country are experiencing.

Hope floats hold on to it.

Josh and I are presenting at the Podcast Jams

August 29th, 2005 by Johnny

September 7th and 8th Josh (from Tinyscreenfulls.com) and I are presenting a session on how to Podcast on the Windows platform. With a $20 price tag this event is extremely reasonable. This “unconference” has evolved from its initial iteration into its current form which in my opinion is much more interesting and compelling. If you find yourself in the Portland are and have any interest at all in Podcasting you must check out this event.

Eric loves his Tablet PC — PG (For Language)

August 23rd, 2005 by Johnny

Eric Rice extols the virtues of the Tablet PC and I give him a hard time — thus the profanity. We talk about Apple and Microsoft and who will rule the living room. I also pontificate on the ideal tablet.

Work-a-holic

August 12th, 2005 by Johnny

I don’t know how my life has evolved to become so full but I seem to have come to a point where I am working all day and most of the night on my job or other interests. I can not even begin to imagine what it is going to be like in September when my son is born. I love what I am doing and really enjoy my Podcasting and Blogging which unfortunately seem to be the last on the list of things to get done. I have a tendency to write in chunks like on the plane when I am flying or other activities that leave me some idle time. The other time I write like now is at night, most times after midnight.

Part of my problem these days in writing is most of the things that I am spending a lot of time on are not things I can freely discus and so the things I am spending most of my mental cycles on are off limits for public consumption. So with that in mind I will stick to the know factors and work from there. Creating a new and exciting world of possibilities I spend my days writing code or writing in general. I have the great privilege of working with some amazing people and hope to live up to all the expectations that are currently in place. Each day brings interesting and unique challenges that I am excited to tackle but at times make me wish I could clone off about 12 more copies of my self to handle all the things that need addressing.

I met the Flocker’s and others as well

August 3rd, 2005 by Johnny

So Tuesday night I headed out to the Doug Fir and Meet the Flocker’s. An early arrival I had a drink upstairs and spoke about some upcoming events with Alex Williams. We moved down stairs where I found out what the Flock was going on. Flock.com is a web site promoting a new Deerpark based web browser with a social networking twist. I signed up for the beta so when I get the invite and get it installed I will give you the low down on what it all entails. I meet some really cool people including Kaliya Hamlin “Identity Woman“, Ian Kallen from Technorati and Bruce Stewart from O’Reilly. It was a pleasure to meet you all and I will be sending out some e-mail to continue the conversations. All in all it was a good time they had good swag and its always good when the drinks are free.
