“It’s time for an Internet Sales Tax” from The Intuitive Life Business Blog
My response:
As an Oregonian I am highly dubious of a sales tax. Government has proved that with more taxes we get more pork. It is added onto to things such as school funding, war funding and regretfully disaster relief. So why would we be motivated to add more?
If the federal government were better managed we would have much better roads, schools, not be at war and not be looked down upon by most of the rest of the world for our actions as of late. So perhaps more of an effort on the feds part to streamline and trim the pork would be in order.
I also do not believe that a 5% flat tax would ever fly. You have too many states that already charge more that 5% and if you tax online commerce those states will probably want to charge the same rate that they do at a traditional store front. This would be a regulatory nightmare that would also lead to the possible off shoring of many commercial entities.
I know the tax burden would be on the consumer, but what if I am a large company and I do not want to pay 5% for my widgets that I purchase through a B2B web site would it not make sense for me to move my company out of the US than to incur this extra cost.

I was interviewed by JD Lasica, author of Darknet and he is the co-founder and executive director of Ourmedia. He asks me about Podcasting and what you need to do it. This was at the Doug Fir in Portland the night before the Podcast Hotel. I would also like to thank JD for sharing a beer with me
next time I hope the experience is a little dryer. Next rounds on me, financially not literally.
Eric Rice, JD Lasica, Alex Williams and I talk to Bert Kile from the American Red Cross about what we can do to help out the victims of Hurricane Katrina. A great source of local information how people in Oregon can help those affected by this tragedy.
