Great Software

November 30th, 2005 by Johnny

I do not advertise on this site and normally do not go on about software, since I work with it all the time. However after Gnomedex I started using a piece of software that has changed how I manage my day to day research and work. This software is called Onfolio and I really don’t know how I lived without it. Organizing my research including e-mail, Office documents and websites into a handy side bar on my browser and giving me great ability to add tags and meta data about these resources. I can blog about this resource directly from a right click as well. As if this were not enough it also can publish “Web reports that can include an RSS feed so others can keep up with your changes” AWESOME. They also have a utility to export the whole collection as XML. I don’t know about you but I can think of a few cool ways to extend this even further leveraging that XML.

Scientific Discoveries and New Ideas

With forethought and a little preparedness a concept emerges into a notion. This notion has moved beyond the fantasies of the mind and has made its way into the formulation of an idea. What makes a good idea is subject to change. What may seem obscure or even irrelevant at one point may end up being the definitive solution for a generation. Ideas oft time seem plucked straight from the subconscious and brought into light by sheer determination. Other times ideas fall forth with such ease that it’s a wonder that it took so long for it materialize. Devoted to spreading knowledge I submit the following for your consideration.

Looking into technologies and scientific break throughs I have set this blog up to satisfy this side of my persona. I am also going to use it to expand on the shows I am doing on PCN as well as other topics that might not quite meet the criteria for that podcast. I hope you will enjoy and look forward to seeing you in the future.. I could not resist.

PCN Banner
PCN is now live to the public.
What is PCN “The Podcaster News Network has been developed by the team at RawVoice to offer you short 3 – 5 minute podcasts, produced by our own PCN podcasters. You customize your daily news by choosing podcasts from various categories.

I am very pleased to be involved in this effort and encourage you to go check it out. My show The Technologist: Futurology for the Masses is a look at coming technologies and scientific innovation and how it effects your life. I try and do the geek to human translation on these issues and bring what is going on in the lab into your life. I try and summarize a topic and correlate how it might play out in the lives of everyday people. The topics are diverse and include such show titles as “Cloned Meat, Cyber People and the Unified Technology Theory. I also have some interviews lined up. My show is on Wednesday and Sunday so come on over and check it out.

More shows keep coming on line and I look forward to sampling them all. With a quick show format and a customizable interface to collect these feeds or listen on the web site I am excited to see how this venture takes off. So I encourage everyone to head on over to http://www.podcasternews.com and find your favorites. Don’t forget to add me to your cast.

Revolution in Education for the 21st Century - One Laptop per Child

November 13th, 2005 by Johnny

This amazing new project should get everyones support. The OLPC is creating a laptop for $100 to distribute to children all over the world. Nicholas Negroponte of MIT is the co-founder of this organization and the force behind the design initiative to create these inexpensive and powerful mobile devices for children all over the world. One of the most amazing features is the hand crank to charge the battery. This allows for third world countries where electricity is non-existent or the power grids are sketchy at best.

MIT Media Lab: $100 Laptop
The MIT Media Lab has launched a new research initiative to develop a
$100 laptop-a technology that could revolutionize how we educate the
world’s children. To achieve this goal, a new, non-profit association,
One Laptop per Child (OLPC), has been created. The initiative was first
announced by Nicholas Negroponte, Lab chairman and co-founder, at the
World Economic Forum at Davos, Switzerland in January 2005.

On the web site they describe the proto type and have some conceptual drawings as well however I am looking forward to the unveiling of the proto type on Wednesday.

November 1st, 2005 by Johnny

With HDTV on demand coming down the pipe sooner rather than latter. It is good to see that even more progress is being made in R&D to speed data transfers. This is a good article on the subject and I wanted to pass it along.
