Six bands and were here at the last night of Podcast Hotel. ALEX you DA Man! This is awesome.
8 p.m. Samantha Murphy, LA and the road
9 p.m. Avencho , Vancouver, BC
10 p.m. Gypsy Soul, Seattle
11 p.m. The Philharmonic, Vancouver, BC
Midnight Chris Tsefalas, Portland, Or.
1 a.m. bill, San Diego, Ca.
The order got shuffled a little bit but this was a great night of music. Samantha Murphy was great during the regularly scheduled show and then I was one of the luck few, Robert and Mayram Scoble, Matt May, Judy, Alex and Paul as well as a few others were blessed by a private set a little later on.

WoW the new stuff is wonderful and such a personal performance was really touching. I will talk to Samantha and see if she will let me put up a snippet of that performance. Gypsy Soul I will defiantly catch again great artists and good people as well. Avencho was jazzy and smooth nice sound and I caught small bits of the other bands and most of bill’s set rock on. I spent most of the later hours out talking with different people about everything that happened at the Podcast Hotel and trying to get ready to pack it up in the AM.
Podcast Hotel San Francisco is in the works I hope to have some more info from the new KSSX/Podcast Hotel partnership. See you next time.

Oiy blurry and throbbing .. so I keep telling myself I will listen to the recorded morning sessions. Last night I decided to work after I got back to the hotel room. At 6:15 AM I went OH S@%t well it is a rockin roll podcast party so I will just rock on and stay up.. So at 11:30 AM head throbbing I wake up so much for rock and or roll. I wish I could be a little more detailed about the conference on Saturday but forgive my blur.
1 p.m. - 2 p.m.

So this is the focus lost session trying to scarf down some food I caught this one and really enjoyed this conversation.

Artists Roundtable: Indie label execs and musicians discuss how grass roots media changes how they promote artists and their work.
Moderator: John Richards, KEXP
Dave Dederer, Presidents of the United States of America
Samantha Murphy, singer/songwriter/podcaster, SMtv
Tim Mitchell, vice president, business and product development, IODA
Cilette Swan, Gypsy Soul
You go Samantha nice keep up the good fight for the Artist. I also wanted to say Dave I am so glad you guys got back control. So under Sony they were back catalog making peanuts now with control they are up on iTunes selling 10,000 a month and pocketing .70 of the .99 “Peaches” baby. Tim said he felt a little conflicted on the artist panel but he was the ying or the yang depending on your Feng Shui.
3 p.m. – 3:45 p.m.
How DO you legally license a podcast?
The entire world is podcasting and with millions of listeners
worldwide the demand for podcasts is high. How do podcasters, both
independent and corporate, legally license a podcast? Is there a
solution? Is it a mechanical, a small performance, both? Where do
podcasters go to get these licenses, how much do they cost and does
the artist get paid? Come hear what major licensing organizations,
publishers and labels have to say about the issue.
Paul Anthony, founder, Rumblefish
Marcus Estes, co-founder, Tables Turned
The Creme de la Crème of the license-o-poluza. WOW! Here is our leagaleze BS response from the big boys. A few Tivo’ed answers were interesting. I would like to give a great thank you to all the representatives that had the cahones to show. Ok so let me break it down into simple language don’t try and hit podcasters with a mechanical and a live performance and … and .. and.. come up with a realistic licensing model based upon scale of the audience and put it in human readable language, like the creative commons license. Give small show producers who by the way are not making any money, for the most part a small price to play “the music of our life” and slide that scale based upon the audience of the show. Just work with us so that we can be a conduit to promote ALL MUSIC! If you do people will pay a reasonable amount of money based on that scale. If not people will only play up and comers and indie artists in which major labels loose a huge new promotional mechanism and the revenue from said sliding scale.
More to come Saturday night oh god where is the Advil…

Hanging out at the Think Spot we started out rough with a conflict with an acting class in the basement. So the host of the venue bought $200 as a peace offering and took it down to the class and the instructor refused the gift. Prissy thespians I guess but we ended up with $200 worth of free food, thanks ThinkSpot. Some nice accoustic tracks got us going, don’t want to disturb the ACTORS, then we kicked it with some DJ action first spin I heard from the other room. I was geting a free promo done from Joe Klein THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!! He did an awsome promo for my Glimpse of Tomorrow show. Which I still need to mix down but will post it here as well when I get it done. We got down with Jacob London, +Russ and Hardscience co-owner Ryan Alexander did some nice mixin then Blymm and his crew dropped it down with some hip hop. It was a great night more to come..

Very cool day today. So Eric Rice kicks us off with
Promotions in the Podcast Age
Eric Rice, EricRice.com
What are the various ways to promote a podcast? What is the next frontier? What is Second Life? How can you create a loop for your muisic to be played and purchased in different worlds, be they rel or virtual?
This was great and Eric allways brings it. On his presentation he put a series of tags and weaved his presentation in and out of this folksonomy. Everything from Creative Commons to Second Life Eric spoke of the way to promote this media IRL ISL as well as cross mediums.
Then we had my stick with Matt and Jake
Podcasting 101 and The Rise of Grass Roots Media
Jake Ludington
Matt May
John Anthony Hartman
We’ll look at the podcast tools from Apple and the different available services for creating shows on your computer . We’ll discuss what tools and technologies podcasters are using. But, really, how do musicians and podcasters get famous to ten listeners or 10,000?
We started with Matt and his Garage Band demo and went into what we do and our beginigs in this new media. I spoke of the original post that got me going on this road as well as spoke about the power of network and interconnecting with other Podcasters. Jake went into some details about how they produce the Chris Pirillo show and we go talked about harware and mic’s. It came off pretty good for the off the cuff nature of our pannel.
LUNCH — Sat with Chris Pirillo at a not so mexian place down at Pike street market but good food though. We spoke about Holographic memory and the optical bus revolution tht is comming and his Third XBOX 360 he just got — Ilet you ask him. He had to run back to start the net session so I finished up lunch and headed back myself.
Next Up
Podcast Business Models
Moderator: Chris Pirillo, founder. Lockergnome
Jonathan Cobb, founder, Kiptronic
David Mansueto, co-founder, Libsyn
William Jeakle, creative director, Filmateria Studios
What are the ways to earn some income from podcasting and how do you it without it becoming too commercial? How do bands and musicians use podcasting to sell their music and get more famous? Getting sponsors, podcast advertising networks, hosting, tracking and statistics will all be discussed.
Some interesting discusion on branding and the monitization of this new media. Some interesting things with advertising and podcasting oops not supposed to say podcasting I mean media/content/schizal4thedizzil podcasting is a transport technology it is not the name of the Contnent
funny moment where I actually think I saw Chris’s blood presure rising before my eyes. He has a point though. Also on a side note someone from Culture and Arts with the City of Seattle was talking about some very cool stuff they were doing with local bands and podcasting.

This was a cool session on the inovations in the mobile industry with audio and podcasting via a cell phone I love Melodeo, it doesn’t hurt that we are distributing PCN shows with them to mobile devices. Look for Glimpse of Tomorrow on a cell phone near you.

“I am so glad I stayed” C.C. Champman and I could not agree with him more. The Think Spot was a Rock and Roll Podcast Party. Fiasco Awesome guitar and all I can say is check them out and ’see’ them. Blame Amy was tight and 3CE was an acoustic version of his normal sound nice. I had a great time and look forward to the conference tomorrow. A lot of conversation on Second Life before the bands started and Eric Rice and I looked at the possibility of changing the environment by raising the water level. I see so many possibilities with Second Life that it is mind boggling. This is going to be an incredible event I can already tell. I am doing a panel at 11 AM tomorrow.

While at Northern Voice I had the pleasure of spending some time with the Scoble’s. Friday night we all met at the lobby of the Hampton Inn and decided to head out into the wilds of Vancouver to have some dinner. Our choice was a Parisian restaurant called the Pink Elephant. Some of the party that had gathered had been to the restaurant on a previous trip to Canada and so we headed out to enjoy a nice dinner. This restaurant was on the North side of Vancouver and since I had driven down from my hotel I ended up driving Robert and Maryam Scoble to the Pink Elephant. So a caravan of cars including Chris Pirillo and Ponzi along with Jake Ludington his family Matt Mullenweg, Julie and Ted Leung and quite a few more embark on our journey. Maryam is in the back seat on the cell phone and is our acting navigator. After momentarily loosing the group following us we pull to the side of the road as they catch up, so far so good. As we cross the main bridge into northern Vancouver the phone rings and I hear “oh no, so where” and then all hell breaks loose for you see the Pink Elephant is closed and a new restaurant has been selected one not in North Vancouver but west. So with the bridge ending and the split in the road coming upon us fast I receive the order to alter our trajectory and head WEST! With my eyes on the rear view mirror I see the people following us headed to the North so I try and signal the change and notice the large barricade markers that we are headed straight for. Switching into Grand Prix mode I check the mirror and slide over into the west bound exit. Whew that was nice maneuver but in the process I lost the poor folks in the car behind us. So in an attempt to get back to them we try a series of U turns and end up on a street that dead ends in both directions. Feeling like a dope I end up having to go back the way we came then drive the opposite direction only to then pull a U turn again to head back towards the bridge. Are you lost in Vancouver yet? Mean while Maryam is on the phone trying to confirm our new choice for dinner. Success we find another Parisian restaurant in West Vancouver and head to that location. We are the first to arrive and wouldn’t you know that Murphy that jokester is waiting for us. Yes you may have guessed this place is closed as well. Two restaurants in one night, we are starting to think the Canadians have something against Parisian food. So we wait for the rest of the caravan to arrive. We had seen some open restaurants on the way here back towards the bridge so we headed back East and finally decided on a Greek place. I don’t know if you have ever had the joy of walking into a restaurant and saying yes I know we don’t have reservations but we need a table for 23. They were accommodating and pulled together about 70% of all the tables in the place and the owner came out and said “No menus we are eating family style.” It was a good time and good food but I got the sense that the wait staff was a little put off by the size of our crowd. Poor Ponzi got her head about bit off when she asked for the check, she was told “You’ll get it when you get it!” All in all it was a memorable night. When I returned the Scobles back to the hotel they asked to get out before the Hotel to walk off some of the food. I obliged but thought it might be for fear of my driving. So the next day I apologized to Maryam for my crazy driving and she said “oh no you did great, much better than Roberts driving.”

Ok the worst possible time it could happen. I have all these great stories and I get back from Northern Voice and get laid up in bed with some sort of nasty Moose flu. I am just getting back into the swing of things but as you can imagine am way far behind. Lot’s more to come on Northern Voice. Urgh I hate the flu.

Modest Proposal for Comment Spam- Akismet - Matt Mullenweg was the event right after my presentation at Moose Camp. Matt went into the the new API that allows you to take advantage of Akismet for personal use, a commercial version is available as well. He brought up some interesting numbers for the growth of word press and the number of metric’s that had been collected already here is a snap shot from the time of this posting:
“3,507,392 spams caught so far
16,368 so far today
82% of all comments are spam”
Matt spoke of extending this into other blogging platforms as well as some new “social spamming”. I sat next to Robert Scoble who blogged about this today as well.
Matt also spoke of integrating this anti-spam solution into Wiki’s which is a growing way spam is being spread. Speaking of Wiki some very interesting news about Word Press it looks like a plug-in is coming for Wiki…> Can’t wait to see what comes of this.

So today I did my presentation at Moose Camp here at Northern Voice 2006. I had a great time and had a very full room I was a little rushed to finish the presentation due to an issue the other day where I lost allot of work. I really did not expect such a crowd so early. I need to get the presentation down a little more ingrained or possibly drop the “script” which I sort of followed. When you take the time to craft and write something sometimes you don’t want to very that verbage but with out some memorization it can seem a little awkward. I want to thank everyone who attended and hope that is was as enjoyable and inspiring to you and that you go out and create massive amounts of media. Personal Media Outlets - We are the Media-
PMO’s was the topic of this presentation and I am planing on putting this presentation up on this blog soon. When I get back I will mix it all down and post it for those of you who did not get a chance to see it.
