Sharing Economies Technologies of Cooperation

Yesterday, I posted that I would start treating my Facebook network of friends as a “public” — a group of people who share my interests, pay attention to me, on occasion communicate with me, and have the potential for joining me in collective action. Some, but not all, are people I have met face-to-face. Some, but not all, are actually friends in my daily life. Most, at this point, are people who have read one of my books (two of which, Tools for Thought and The Virtual Community have been online for over a decade) or heard me speak, or were students in one of my classes. ….

We are only now exposing the six degrees of separation in any visually understandable way. These interconnected ties have become tangible through the utilization of social networks and other web weavings that this amazing technology called the Internet has brought us.

Those around you whom you touch are spanning various life spaces from the millennial who takes these statements as a known to the boomer and beyond who still remember a time, shall we say B.P.C. (before PC), when the connected nature of our species was a whole different experience.

As a former colleague working on the Digital Universe, although I do not think we ever met face to face, the Facebook platform and the web in general has given me a chance to “reconnect” with your journey. I personally feel that these extended networks are a way to enhance our lives and have first hand seen the six degrees unfold in amazing ways that have improved my life from a business perceptive as well as on a personal level. Consider this my all in opt in.

Be well and my the coming year find you friending allot.
