Cre8con has Inverged my Media

September 8th, 2008 by Johnny

This last week we did a full three day AlphaGeek TV shoot at Inverge and Cre8con. Both conferences were amazing and it was good to see old friends and make some new ones. I had to man interviews and run a camera so live tweeting the events was not possible. Many other folks did a great job of live blogging the event. You should check out the nice coverage by Nichole Ferraro over at Internet Evolution as well check PDXPIPLINE and for twtitters check out Inverge on quoteably.

So many things I don’t know were to start.

W+K was representin’

Renny Gleason from W+K @ Inverge then Jelly Helm of W+K, until Oct 1 (very recent news), @ Cre8con gave some very interesting talks that were both very apt for the audience. Renny is a hoot and the neo-punk goggled social persona of his online participatory experiences came out and he walked us through a London hotel room experience in massive social media out put. This presentation makes me think we need to consolidate the ability to cross post to all of of our flood of social spaces. It really struck home with me and made me realize we need a 12 step program for all of us socialholics. Hi my name is John and I am trying to stop the twittering and facebookish adictions really all I need is a yelp or two and I will be fine.

Karl we need a rally multi-player Nokia games session and a Pint or two.

Disney brought us Pixey Hollow and braclets that connect online and off.

Tony Uphoff was a great interview and I look forward to speaking about possibilities.

I asked William Swatout what A.I. would be like in 30 years after being in it for 30.

Raven Zachary we need to toast our iPhones and have a virtual Pint together some time.

Ed it was fun on the bus and really hope we stay in touch and can’t wait for the “party”

Erin up up and away

Scott is always great and we should watch the 2012 Olympics to see what was on target.

Josh Green from MIT was a home run, just like last year. Mate we need to grab a pint again real soon! Convergence Culture the two year odyssey was shifted by a group of MAD MEN.

Marc Scarpa stepped in when Michael Tchao got sick and did his presentation early and wow did the live internet streaming work from 1996 gave me a flash back and fast forward all at once.

OK apologies to the other speakers but this blog post is allready a novel. We have about 35 hours of footage so you know I will be talking about this more.

August 5th, 2008 by Johnny

Well I finally got a 3g iphone and set up the wordpress application. This is very cool but I need to get better with the keyboard. Slow going but getting faster I see some predictive text features that I am getting the swing of. This is so amazing to have this much power in my pocket.

Wikigate and my own personal flashback

July 24th, 2008 by Johnny

Today I am told a story that seems all to familiar to me. It involves an article on Wikipedia that has been ripped from the site. So as I listen more I start having some serious déjà vu. It amazes me how little has changed in two years and just how powerful Wikipedia has become. Let’s face it Google loves Wikipedia and if Google loves you the power is yours. Janet has a great post about this as well that has a nifty chart exemplifying this. So with great power comes great responsibility and this just seems yet again to be a case where Wikipedia is not being responsible.

Ok so for those of you who do not know me from Adam, I used to be the technology evangelist for the Digital Universe Foundation and part of the DU was the Encyclopedia of Earth. At the time I worked with Larry Sanger who was well let say vital to the creation of Wikipedia (this is another Wikigate unto itself) he was key in helping to craft the EoE on a wiki platform as a vetted open wiki i.e. experts in the field we called them stewards, controlled and vetted a topics information. We did this because of all the troll like behavior that exists on Wikipedia. So users could collaborate on the wiki but it was vetted first to keep the Wikiality and truthiness in check.

Now I was deeply involved in this project, I was initially a software engineer and DB guy with the project and moved into the evangelist role. So I understand some of the complexities of a wiki and absolutely understand how versions of truths can vary. I once spent seven hours on a conference call with academics debating Dublin Core and ISO standards and how our Semantic data structures should be laid out in the DU. Talk about a long debate about what the true standard of how data about data is defined… I still get dizzy. So as you might glean from this I have a touch of history with the Way of the WIki.

Now we often heard from academia that they were very frustrated with anything they tried to contribute to Wikipedia due to the vandalism and troll like behavior. Some professors found it reprehensible that college students so were so heavily using Wikipedia as the master source for information on topics. On any given Sunday you may find an explosion of growth in the population of African elephants and thus as a master source it is flawed.

Now as I have said this power comes from Google and the fact that Wikipedia pages are so organically SEO powerful. So De facto since it is now common place for most businesses to have not only an SEO strategy as well as a social media plan Wikipedia must be a consideration in that plan.

Now to the meat of the matter I have known Kent Lewis for some time and I can tell you from a personal and professional level he is aces. A stand up guy with a reputation people drool over. He is active in so many things and has always been one of the best at being open and honest. So the story he told me this morning made me mad as a hornet to think that yet again the trolls rule Wikipedia and that so many people have this unreal sense of the “facts” that come from a very powerful knowledge repository. The hidden wizards of OZ have from behind the curtain pulled the leavers and dumped an article BECAUSE of the transparent way Anvil and Attensa talked about utilizing Wikipedia.

Now I have read the article about Attensa that was on Wikipedia and did not see anything biased or commercial about the writing. As Scott Niesen points out Wikipedia had no problems with the article until the Marketing Sherpa article came out. This is just wrong. What are companies supposed to do Wikipedia holds a position of power in the SEO space and companies must pay employees or other companies to monitor and maintain SEO and social media strategies or risk becoming invisible to customers and clients when it comes to online, which is becoming more and more important. To quote Kent –

Anvil and Attensa played by the rules as best we could (maximizing our Truthiness in our own Wikiality) by providing accurate company content and balanced perspective (including competitor links on topical pages). It’s too bad the fact that the content we provided to Wikipedia users that was considered relevant and valuable yesterday has been deleted because of unrealistic and unfair rules.

Moving forward, Wikipedia needs to figure out if their current structure and process can meet the needs of the increasingly savvy and skeptical Web surfer, and do so before Google decides for them.

So Wikipedians what are companies to do when the reality of the “90-9-1 rule” let’s 1% control this repository of “truth” and even worse a fraction of that 1% - that smells a bit trollish- has the capacity to ban information. I full heartedly support your neutral aims for information and think wikipedia and the other open knowledge projects are amazing but you need to open the curtain because the hidden Wizard of OZ is an old model and this is the new Reputation Economy and transparency is an expected price to be paid.

***** For transparency and full disclosure awhile back I did some freelance work for Attensa, produced some podcasts and screen casts, but I am not doing any work for them now. It’s a small world after all.

Web Manual - WM316 - Social Media & Web 2.0

June 1st, 2008 by Johnny
Well after a technology deficient trip to New York, cell phone goes down and internet connections were few and far between and VERY slow, I made it back to the house and to bed at 3AM EST - Midnight per my nightstand clock. I awoke gathered my things and headed into downtown. This is my first class at PSU and I think it went well. We had 14 people on the roles and we rolled through a morning of statistics and information about the changes in the web.

I dashed off at lunch to be at a meeting over at the Art Institute of Portland with the other folks who are putting together a revitalized Creative Conference and found out we are a GO! I said my good byes early and made my way back to PSU.

In the afternoon we covered Blogging, Podcasting, and Vlogging when I went over some of the tools we dropped onto Seesmic and posted a video and recived a number of responses.

I closed with presenting a breif overview of my N.I.M.B.L.E. (Navigating Media Beyond Linier Experiences). The traditional linear video consumption patterns are starting to change. We are already see the Internet changing the way that media is being watched. Short format and user generated content is growing in views into the realm of tradition TV. The numbers that a successful viral video garner are in the millions and the Neilsons metrics don’t quite translate to this new model. These initial changes are starting to push the habits, especially among the younger demographic, into new patterns that make the next phase of evolution a more palatable experience. This new consumption pattern moves beyond the traditional linear viewing experience and into a non-linear viewing experience. Think of video consumption more like the way we consume blogs or other multi-threaded mediums like forums. — More on this coming soon….

I will post up the links and some glossery terms here over the next few days and will be building out a microsite for this information.

The Facebook Slave Trade?

May 17th, 2008 by Johnny

Today I was rather disturbed by a Facebook application called Friends for Sale! My immediate response was to twitter about how my “friends” are selling and buying me and worse yet I am a F*(&ing PET! WTF!!!

The immediate response got via twitter was ” sadiemedley @feedia i’m so with you. i deleted that app after some creepy dude “bought” me for a couple grand. ack!”

I know this may have been intended as a joke but it rubs me the wrong way BIG time.

I never installed this, IMHO twisted little facebook application and yet here I am being bought and sold
(I covered the names of my “friends” so as not to seem like I am attacking them) side note this may make me unfriend them.

This is very very tacky at the least and out right sick at it’s worst. Do we really think the buying and selling of people is a joke in 2008? I can tell you a number of communities will come at you with a vengeance if this becomes mass market. Facebook you are putting yourself at serious risk of some VERY bad PR if you do not do something about this ASAP!

The fact that this application has 15K in fans makes me wonder if they really thought this through or just clicked some link, what is wrong with people? The thing that makes me most concerned and made me write this post was that this has stalker fetish freak written all over it. I tell you now that I am blocking this application and if I still keep getting bought as some sort of Facebook Pet Slave I will unfriend anyone with this application and might just abandon Facebook and tell all my client to stay away.

To me this application violates Platform Application Guidlines

I. Applications may not promote, or contain content (including any advertising content) referencing, facilitating, promoting or using, the following:

2. Obscene, defamatory, libelous, slanderous and/or unlawful content;

Maybe —

5. Gambling, including without limitation, any online casino, sports books, bingo or poker;

9. Hate speech, whether directed at an individual or a group, and whether based upon the race, sex, creed, national origin, religious affiliation, marital status, sexual orientation or language of such individual or group;

This is just WRONG -

Facebook | Friends For Sale!

Buy and sell your friends as pets! You can make your pets poke, send gifts, or just show off for you. Make money as a shrewd pets investor or as a hot commodity! Friends for Sale is the bees knees!
